Accomplia

Accomplia

What is Acomplia?

Accomplia was supposed to be part of a new class of weight loss supplements. It was first introduced in Europe, and then they wanted it to move to the United States. It used addiction fighting ingredients which would apparently suppress the need to binge, eat more than you actually need, and suppress appetite in general which all sounded good at first. They used it as a dual action drug that would help you to quit smoking and lose weight. Most commonly used among obese patients trying to quit smoking and avoid any associated weight gain, it gained quite a bit of popularity for a short time.

What happened to Acomplia?

Unfortunately, they later found that it was causing serious psychological problems. At that point, it had never been actually approved by the FDA, and there were even allegations of them actively working to hide negative study results that would have told groups that it was dangerous. Actually, it was causing a number of suicides, and they were considering an official investigation into Sanofi Aventis because of it. But it never went that far. It was simply banned, and then it was discontinued.

Conclusion

Either way, European countries banned the product, and Sanofi-Aventis eventually pulled it off the market all together. There were a number of other similar prototypes being tested, and they were accordingly pulled as well. They continue to petition the FDA to approve it in some ways. However, they are not actually producing it at this time as they obviously have nowhere to sell it. So what would be the point of it sitting on the shelves as they waste more money on it.
